Bio

Jorga Mesfin was born and raised in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and is deeply in love with most things Ethiopian.  A self-taught musician with a musical background that combines the spirit of Jazz with the ancient and diverse sounds found in Ethiopian music, he is equally well versed in both traditions and fuses the two most effectively.  Jorga has traveled around the world, from India, Bangladesh, Singapore, Malaysia, Namibia, Botswana, Ghana and South Africa, to the United States where he resides when not at home in Ethiopia. 

Having already amassed an impressive discography both in Ethiopia and the United States Jorga has recently concluded work with the talented pianist/composer Vijay Iyer as co-creator for the score of Haile Gerima’s most recent film “Teza,” which continues to garner numerous awards.  Through the Nubian-Jazz Project Jorga continues to explore the commonalities of the music of East Africa, including Eritrea, Sudan and Egypt. Jorga’s personal philosophy on music: “Learn as I play, play from my heart, and trust my ears.” And that of which he is most proud in this life: “That I have finally found the courage to stay true to myself.”

This album was recorded on a one night recording session on October 29th, 2006, at studio Maru.  There were no rehearsals.  Every musician came with his or her instrument and played whatever felt was right at the time.  Be open and listen…I am still listening myself. God is Good and it is ALL GOOD!  This music is a tribute to THE CREATOR (Egzabair, Allah, Waaqa, God)…THE GIFT OF THIS LIFE…and OUR ANCESTORS who gave so much for all of us to be here today.
